Gifts for strandbakkehuset

Volunteer Lisbeth Kraul

Could I tempt you with a little Tushie Cake? Or a crocheted comfort rump?”
There were a lot of gifts to choose from when StorySoldier visited Strandbakkehuset children’s and young people’s hospice yesterday.

Volunteer Lisbeth Kraul couldn’t help but smile at the Tushie Cakes, and after a quick taste test, they were declared: “Insanely delicious Rumps!”

Having something to laugh at or something to do together (reading, crocheting, beading, baking) can be just the relaxed atmosphere the doctor ordered that naturally opens up for more serious conversations, e.g., about death.

Ward manager Lisbeth Refshauge Højer (light blue coat) says:
- Our childhood education specialist and music therapist performed a theater piece that included a hearse. That scene made a lot of sense to one of our hospitalized children, and it spawned a natural chat about something that might otherwise be hard to understand and hard to talk about.

According to Strandbakkehuset’s ward manager, the hospice’s fundamental view is that it is a place of LIFE until death:
- Death comes no matter what. That applies to all of us. But until death, we are here, for these families.

StorySoldier looks forward to contributing even more to the positive experiences of patients and their families in children’s and young people’s hospices and palliative care wards.
